Woodlake Park Golf & Country Club

Set in 140 acres in one of the most beautiful areas of Gwent, Woodlake Park overlooks the spectacular Llandegfedd reservoir, the Brecon Beacons, Black Mountains and the Vale of Usk. The championship standard course has a par of 71 and standard scratch of 72.

Opened in 1993, the course has matured quickly and the quality of both fairways and greens make this one of the finest inland golf courses in Wales. The greens, including the practice greens, were all constructed to the U.S.Golf Association specifications and are truly one of the major assets of the course.

The Clubhouse has two large balconies overlooking the 18th green and provides an outstanding view of the reservoir to the south west. The Spikes bar has direct access to the lower terrace and the practice putting green.

The Course

Hole 1 - Par 4 - Yardage 371 - S/I 8
A demanding opening hole for any standard of golfer. An accurate tee shot required favouring the right hand side of the fairway. A mid iron required to reach the elevated green.

Hole 2 - Par 4 - Yardage 286 - S/I 15
A long iron required from this tee leaving a full pitch shot into the green. A good chance of obtaining a birdie if you play this hole with some caution.

Hole 3 - Par 5 - Yardage 537 - S/I 3
A genuine par 5 hole. On the tee you need to beware the two bunkers to the right of the fairway. Bunkers either side of the fairway could also catch the second shot. Green is fast putting from above the hole.

Hole 4 - Par 3 - Yardage 231 - S/I 11
An excellent par 3 which plays its full yardage from the competition tee. Playing into the wind, this tee shot would test any touring professional.

Hole 5 - Par 4 - Yardage 360 - S/I 5
Tee shot should should be set out to the left, avoiding group of trees on right side, to provide a clear shot to the two tier green. Depending on hole position, club selection vital for shot into green - plan to be below the hole.

Hole 6 - Par 4 - Yardage 442 - S/I 1
Keep tee shot to the left on the line of trees on right side. Second shot to narrow green is key to this hole. Be wary of running thro' green when ground is firm.

Hole 7 - Par 3 - Yardage 145 - S/I 17
Another elevated par 3. Wind direction will play a large part in determining club selection and can vary from a simple wedge shot to a long iron.

Hole 8 - Par 5 - Yardage 465 - S/I 7
A par 5 with the longer hitters able to reach the green in two. Should be a birdie chance for the average golfer if ball kept in fairway and bunkers in front of the green are avoided.

Hole 9 - Par 4 - Yardage 365 - S/I 13
A wood or long iron from the tee to the right side of the fairway opens up the green for the second shot. A good tee shot will leave a short iron to the green - aim to the left side of the green for best results.

Hole 10 - Par 3 - Yardage 170 - S/I 10
Aim for the centre of the green at all times & don't get too ambitious and go for the pin. Green, guarded by bunkers either side, has sloping ground to the sides making any misdirected shot difficult to recover.

Hole 11 - Par 5 - Yardage 536 - S/I 6
Aim the tee shot to the right side of the fairway allowing the natural slope of the ground to position the ball for the 2nd shot. Beware the hazard in front of the green. Always try to leave the ball below the pin on this green.

Hole 12 - Par 5 - Yardage 516 - S/I 14
Aiming the tee shot towards the fairway bunker on the left leaves the easier position for the 2nd shot. Avoid the bunker guarding the green leaves a straight forward pitch to the green. Again, always try to leave the ball below the pin on this green.

Hole 13 - Par 4 - Yardage 347 - S/I 8
A favourite hole - a good tee shot to the left of the fairway leaves a short iron into the green. Plenty of trouble around this green particularly the bunker short and to the right of the green.

Hole 14 - Par 3 - Yardage 139 - S/I 18
Although the shortest par 3 on the course, you must be accurate with your tee shot. A two tier green where it is important your tee shot is on the correct level to ensure a maximum of a two putt finish.

Hole 15 - Par 4 - Yardage 414 - S/I 2
For the average golfer it is advisable to play this hole as a par 5. Position the tee shot to the right to avoid the hazard to the left. Play your 2nd shot short of the bunkers to leave a short pitch to the green. This green can be very tricky with the pin position on the right hand side.

Hole 16 - Par 3 - Yardage 196 - S/I 12
A spectacular par 3 - play with caution if you wish to protect your score. Don't be too ambitious and attack the pin - play to the widest part of the green. Also avoid being too wide to the right of the green which leaves a difficult 2nd shot to hold on the putting surface.

Hole 17 - Par 4 - Yardage 466 - S/I 4
A long par 4 which requires two good shots to reach the green in regulation. If your short of the green, the easiest pitch is from the left side of the fairway short of the bunkers.

Hole 18 - Par 4 - Yardage 298 - S/I 16
A great finishing hole - lay up short of the hazard with your tee shot leaving a short pitch to the green. Out of bounds to the left and right lie in wait for those trying to drive the green.
