Pyle & Kenfig Golf Club

Pyle and Kenfig Golf Course, affectionately known as 'P & K' with its lofty sand dunes hugging the South Wales coast of Porthcawl is situated in a wonderful stretch of golfing country.

Glorious views and historic associations adorn this undulating course with its natural hazard of hillocks, valleys and towering dunes. However serious the game, time must be made to appreciate the panoramic views. The Bristol Channel, the Gower Peninsula, Sker Farm and the magnificent Welsh Mountains can all be seen from various points.

Unusually for a links course, Pyle and Kenfig is laid out in two loops of nine. The original front nine is where to make a score because the back nine is a very stiff test, especially when the wind is up. The 11th hole, a 525-yard par five known as the Valley Hole, is where the dunes come in to play - from here on in, it's sheer entertainment. Drink in the view from the 14th tee, a 416-yard par four - the panorama towards the Gower Peninsula is stunning. Pyle & Kenfig's last three holes are amongst the best closing holes in golf and, with each over 400 yards and with a daunting tee shot towards deeply-bunkered problems, they will severely test the mettle of the very best golfers.

The well appointed and comfortable clubhouse complements this magnificent course and visitors will always find a warm and friendly welcome.

The Course

Hole 1 - Par 4 - Yardage 382 - S/I 8
A dog-legged opening hole slightly uphill at the start with well positioned bunkers left and right to catch a wayward drive. Played into the prevailing wind it requires a good drive and a good second into a well-protected green which slopes off at the back and to the left.

Hole 2 - Par 4 - Yardage 434 - S/I 2
A fairly straightforward hole with an open inviting green which slopes from right to left. Beware of the well-positioned bunkers on the right of the fairway which will catch a drive that is slightly off line. With a slight dog-leg from left to right and an undulating fairway, beware of the drive kicking off into the rough and gorse on the left.

Hole 3 - Par 4 - Yardage 370 - S/I 10
This hole, whilst being relatively short, demands an accurate tee shot which could leave a blind second shot to the green. Played down the prevailing wind, holding the green with the second shot requires great accuracy.

Hole 4 - Par 3 - Yardage 177 - S/I 16
With its tee on the highest point of the course this is the shortest hole on the course. However, if the wind is blowing an accurate 3 or 4 iron is required to reach this well guarded green.

Hole 5 - Par 5 - Yardage 503 - S/I 4
The first of three par 5s with well positioned bunkers to catch the drive and a green that slopes from back to front. The green is the most northerly point on the course.

Hole 6 - Par 3 - Yardage 167 - S/I 18
The second of the par 3s and possibly the easiest at a mere 167 yards. However, an accurate tee shot is required to avoid the bunkers protecting a difficult sloping green.

Hole 7 - Par 4 - Yardage 350 - S/I 12
The shortest par 4 on the course at 350 yards requires an accurate tee shot for position rather than length as the hole dog-legs to the left.

Hole 8 - Par 4 - Yardage 379 - S/I 14
A straightforward par 4 with an inviting open green. Beware of the two fairway bunkers well positioned to catch a drive that is slightly off line.

Hole 9 - Par 5 - Yardage 526 - S/I 6
The second and longest of the par 5s at 526 yards downhill all the way back to the clubhouse. Again both the fairway and green are well guarded by bunkers and the large inviting green has a subtle slope from front to back.

Hole 10 - Par 4 - Yardage 417 - S/I 1
The first hole on the back nine normally plays into the prevailing wind and with a stroke index of 1 this hole, whilst looking innocuous, requires an accurate drive and a long carry.

Hole 11 - Par 5 - Yardage 524 - S/I 7
Known as the Valley Hole this is the last of the par 5s and is the start of the venture into the dunes. At 524 yards and a dog-leg to the left a long, accurate drive is required to carry the rough. The sloping green is perched on a high rise of sand dunes in a small valley.

Hole 12 - Par 3 - Yardage 201 - S/I 17
This is the third of the par 3s and requires an accurate tee shot normally into the prevailing wind to a small green that is well protected by natural and other hazards.

Hole 13 - Par 4 - Yardage 369 - S/I 13
This hole has a grandeur all of its own. After admiring the glorious view from the tee a well placed drive through a valley guarded by huge, naturally bunkered sand dunes is required. The shot to the green is another test for it is surrounded by big sandbanks and has a narrow entrance.

Hole 14 - Par 4 - Yardage 416 - S/I 5
Known as the Punch Bowl, the panoramic view from the tee of this dog-leg hole embraces the Bristol Channel, the Gower Peninsula, Sker House and the Welsh Mountains. With a long carry to the fairway, an accurate second shot is then required to reach a well-guarded Punch Bowl green. Beware of three putting if you are above the hole on this green.

Hole 15 - Par 3 - Yardage 203 - S/I 15
This is the last of the par 3s and at 203 yards the longest and probably the hardest. An accurate tee shot is required to avoid the huge sand hazards front left of the green. Advice would be to aim for the heart of the green no matter where the pin is positioned.

Hole 16 - Par 4 - Yardage 431 - S/I 11
This is the start of a difficult three hole finish with many a card having been ruined playing the final three holes. The drive over an intimidating bank is followed by a shot to a plateau green with undulations ready to take your ball down into two deep greenside bunkers.

Hole 17 - Par 4 - Yardage 443 - S/I 3
This hole has a blind tee shot and should be kept to the left half of the fairway. The second shot must avoid the cross bunker and the deep bunkers left and right of the green.

Hole 18 - Par 4 - Yardage 436 - S/I 9
If your card is still going strong the intimidating tee shot over the gorse requires nerves of steel. Having negotiated the tee shot an accurate second is required to find the target of this finishing hole.
