Golf Club Descriptions

Celtic Manor Golf Resort

Complementing the unspoilt beauty of the landscape of Wales, the Wentwood Hills and Roman Road courses offer very different challenges to golfers and provide venues to suit every occasion. The speed with which Celtic Manor has impressed itself on the world golfing scene is little short of miraculous. Less than seven years after it was founded in 1995, the Wentwood Hills course was selected as the host course for the 2010 Ryder Cup.

Home of the £1.1 million Wales Open event on the European Tour since 2000, Wentwood Hills provides a spectacular golfing experience with a tough uphill finish that taxes the best players. It will be adapted to create a purpose-built Ryder Cup course with excellent spectator facilities in time for 2010. Wentwood Hills is certainly a spectacular championship par 72 course which combines hilly landscape and links-like features.

A feature of Wentwood Hills singled out by many people is the magnificent view from the second hole. Journalist Richard Simmons wrote in Golf International magazine: "The full splendour of the lower holes is laid bare as you are treated to what must be one of the finest views in British golf."

Roman Road, the first of the resort's courses, opened in 1995 and soon established a reputation as one of the top courses in Britain.

A championship venue for top professional and amateur events, Roman Road is nevertheless ideal for all levels of play. The course offers a variety of tees on each hole and has generous fairways and greens.

The Course - Wentwood Hills

Hole 1 - Par 4 - Yardage 446 - S/I 6
A very challenging opening hole. Favour the right side of the fairway, which will leave you in an elevated position to hit the green. You’ve got a medium to long second shot into a large green. A descending drop from the fairway to the green will mean careful club selection. The green slopes from back to front so keep the ball beneath the hole.

Hole 2 - Par 5 - Yardage 589 - S/I 12
The driving line is to the left side of the bunkers. There is plenty of room over the bunkers for the longer hitters. The woods to the left of the fairway will come into play on any wayward shot. A safe second shot will be to lay up before the fairway bunkers. For the longer hitters, the challenge to hit the green in two will be on. The pitch into the green will need to be judged carefully as the green is surrounded by bunkers and slopes. Again, the green slopes from back to front.

Hole 3 - Par 4 - Yardage 417 - S/I 14
Elevated tee, generally into the prevailing wind. A careful drive needs to be placed to the left side of the fairway. The fairway slopes from left to right, helping the ball back to the middle. A descending second shot into the green will be played with a medium to long club. The green is guarded by bunkers and slopes, so careful club selection is required.

Hole 4 - Par 4 - Yardage 405 - S/I 16
The drive is played to the right of the bunkers. There’s more room to the right side of the fairway than meets the eye, and the slope from right to left will collect the ball to the centre. The approach with the second shot is to a large undulating green. With bunkers to the front left and slopes to the back, a careful club selection is again required.

Hole 5 - Par 5 - Yardage 561 - S/I 8
A good driving hole with a bunker down the right side of the fairway. For the longer hitters, the bunker is the line. For the conservative golfer, the drive is to the left of the bunker. The second shot should be played to the right side of the fairway short of the fairway bunker. The water comes into play throughout the left side of the hole. The third shot into the green must favour the centre to centre right and not to get too ambitious to the left side, as the green slopes towards the water.

Hole 6 - Par 4 - Yardage 430 - S/I 2
Drive the ball to the right side of the fairway. Keep well away from the water down the left side. The second shot will mean either a lay up short of the water or a confident longer shot onto a large green. If the player is going for the green in two, he must ensure an extra club or two is taken as the prevailing wind is always into the player’s face. The green slopes from back to front and is surrounded by bunkers and slopes.

Hole 7 - Par 3 - Yardage 168 - S/I 10
A great par three with a tee shot to be played into the centre/centre left of the green. There is no advantage in going for a flag that is positioned right side of the green as water surrounds the hole. The green again slopes back to front with strategic bunkers placed to the back left of the green.

Hole 8 - Par 4 - Yardage 410 - S/I 4
The drive here is to the left side of the fairway and just short of the fairway bunkers. Keep to the left with the approach into the green as water is in play throughout the right side of the hole. It is a reasonably big green that slopes away from the water, which is unusual.

Hole 9 - Par 3 - Yardage 207 - S/I 18
A good par three with a medium to long shot from the tee. The green is surrounded by bunkers and slopes off to the left side. A safe shot here is to the middle of the green.

Hole 10 - Par 4 - Yardage 411 - S/I 7
The drive must be placed to the right side of the fairway bunkers. A generous fairway will allow you plenty of room for a long drive. The short approach with the second shot should be played to the middle/left of the green to allow an uphill putt.

Hole 11 - Par 5 - Yardage 583 - S/I 9
The driving line is the left of the bunkers. It must be played carefully, as the fairway cuts in from the left to catch the stray pull or hook shot. The longer hitters may want to take on the green; however, the more strategic play is to lay up short of the green side bunkers. This will leave a comfortable approach into a green that slopes from back to front.

Hole 12 - Par 3 - Yardage 205 - S/I 17
An elevated tee shot to a green that is surrounded by bunkers. Playing to the middle front of the green will be the safe shot as the green slopes from back to front.

Hole 13 - Par 4 - Yardage 393 - S/I 3
The driving line is to the middle/left of the fairway but make sure you pass the corner of the dog leg. You have to hit the fairway as the approach is to a tight narrow green, with water short and slopes off to the right and back.

Hole 14 - Par 3 - Yardage 182 - S/I 13
A challenging par three to a slightly elevated green so take an extra club for your tee shot. The green is surrounded by a bunker front right and slopes to front left. The green slopes from back to front so careful club selection is required.

Hole 15 - Par 4 - Yardage 452 - S/I 1
A slight dog leg from right to left with the drive to be positioned to the right side of the fairway. The second shot will leave you with a longer iron or even the wood to a slightly elevated green. An extra club will be required to hit this demanding green as bunkers are positioned to the front. The green slopes from back to front and has a two tier feature so careful putting is required.

Hole 16 - Par 4 - Yardage 312 - S/I 15
The drive here is to lay up short of the three fairway bunkers, positioned approximately 260 yards from the tee. The short approach into an elevated green requires careful club selection as the bottom of the flag is not visible. The green slopes slightly from left to right and from front to back.

Hole 17 - Par 4 - Yardage 397 - S/I 5
The driving line is to the right of the fairway as bunkers are positioned to the left side. A long second shot to a slightly elevated green will require an extra club. The shot is to the middle of the green as bunkers are not visible to the right and slopes guard the left and the back edge of the green.

Hole 18 - Par 5 - Yardage 529 - S/I 11
Another good uphill golf hole. You need to avoid the bunkers on the right. The second shot is to lay up to the second set of fairway bunkers, leaving a short approach to a large green, which slopes from back to front.

The Course - Roman Road

Hole 1 - Par 4 - Yardage 448 - S/I 3
A testing opener that requires a good tee shot to avoid the bunkers on the left. A well-aimed tee shot should leave a medium/long iron to the green.

Hole 2 - Par 3 - Yardage 193 - S/I 13
The only hole on the course without bunkers. This testing par 3 requires a mid-iron shot favouring the right side of the green, the natural contours should feed the ball to the flag.

Hole 3 - Par 5 - Yardage 557 - S/I 9
A double dogleg requiring your most accurate tee shot. The longer hitters will be faced with the challenge of going for the green, or laying up for position for a short iron to the green.

Hole 4 - Par 4 - Yardage 323 - S/I 15
The shortest par 4 on the course but by no means the easiest. Accuracy is required both with the tee shot, to avoid a nest of bunkers and with the second shot to find a two-tiered elevated green.

Hole 5 - Par 4 - Yardage 437 - S/I 5
Your tee shot is blind and requires a well-struck ball, avoiding the bunkers on the left will leave a mid iron to an undulating green.

Hole 6 - Par 4 - Yardage 444 - S/I 1
Stroke index 1 this par 4 plays the hardest hole on the course and requires a good tee shot over the crest of a hill. The second shot is all uphill to the smallest green on the course protected by a large bunker on the right – pars are rare but very rewarding!

Hole 7 - Par 4 - Yardage 441 - S/I 7
Come through the tunnel towards the clubhouse. This par 4 requires an accurate tee shot aimed towards the two silver birch trees in the wood below. The second shot is down hill to a sloping green that tests your accuracy and judgement.

Hole 8 - Par 3 - Yardage 203 - S/I 11
A long par 3 played through an avenue of trees. The woods behind create a natural amphitheatre for a well-protected green.

Hole 9 - Par 4 - Yardage 353 - S/I 17
Par 4, dog legging right to left, up the hill towards the clubhouse. The fairway is protected on both sides by bunkers and a well directed shot will leave you a short iron to an open green – very good for getting that birdie!

Hole 10 - Par 4 - Yardage 420 - S/I 2
A sharp dog leg hole that requires position off the tee, followed by a well hit second across the valley towards a large narrow green.

Hole 11 - Par 3 - Yardage 198 - S/I 10
A favourite par 3 for a friendly nearest the pin competition. A well struck mid-iron from the elevated tee to an undulating green brings due reward - anything short will fall in the valley below.

Hole 12 - Par 4 - Yardage 390 - S/I 12
A testing dogleg that requires a good tee shot to avoid the bunkers on the left side of the fairway. A well-struck tee shot will leave a medium iron to an open green.

Hole 13 - Par 3 - Yardage 179 - S/I 18
A short par 3 in front of the hotel. A medium iron off the tee to a green protected by bunkers on both the left and right.

Hole 14 - Par 4 - Yardage 376 - S/I 4
Off the tee, the lake on the left hand side comes very much into play. Hold your nerve and strike a tee shot up the middle of the wide fairway. The second shot will carry over the corner of the lake towards a very protected green – a great hole to play in regulation.

Hole 15 - Par 3 - Yardage 175 - S/I 14
All uphill, this par 3 is protected for its entire length by the stream that flows from the pond on the left below the large tree. Depending on the pin placement, club selection can vary right through the bag – check the pin out when you walk off the 1st green!

Hole 16 - Par 5 - Yardage 519 - S/I 16
This short par 5 offers a great opportunity to pick up a stroke. Reachable with two good shots an eagle is very much on the cards.

Hole 17 - Par 4 - Yardage 413 - S/I 8
The left-hand side spells trouble all the way with fairway bunkers and out of bounds within reach from the tee. Long hitters may chance their arm by flying the trouble but accuracy is still needed if you want to play your second from this tight fairway.

Hole 18 - Par 4 - Yardage 426 - S/I 6
Bunkers on the left and right guard this narrow fairway. A well struck tee shot leaves an iron to the large green in front of the clubhouse –a great time to make a par or birdie and enjoy that first sip in the 19th hole.
