Golf Club Descriptions

Cardiff Golf Club

As you'd expect, the golf club bearing the name of the country's capital is somewhere well worth the visit.

This parkland course, which was founded in 1921, is situated three miles to the north of Cardiff city centre and has trees as its main feature.

The layout is made up of an interesting variety of holes, many of which have a stream running through them. The course measures just over 6,000 yards with a par of 70 and provides a stern test of golf. This, together with its recently built clubhouse, provides a fine facility both for visitors and members alike.

The Course

Hole 1 - Par 4 - Yardage 414 - S/I 9
A good tee shot is necessary to get a par 4. A pulled drive results in the ball ricocheting in the woods, and a slice will find the ball nestling behind yet more trees.

Hole 2 - Par 3 - Yardage 152 - S/I 15
The double tiered green with severe slopes in front and at both sides demands an accurate shot with a medium or short iron.

Hole 3 - Par 4 - Yardage 434 - S/I 3
A demanding par 4 requiring a good drive to enable the green to be hit with a short iron over the brook.

Hole 4 - Par 5 - Yardage 516 - S/I 5
Allows the long hitter an opportunity to find the long narrow green with a good second wood shot, but against the prevailing wind this is not often achieved.

Hole 5 - Par 3 - Yardage 144 - S/I 17
A short iron shot downhill to a green well guarded with bunkers. Out of bounds on the right and magnificent oak trees on the left are waiting to catch the ill directed tee shot.

Hole 6 - Par 4 - Yardage 420 - S/I 1
One of the best par 4's. Out of bounds on the right of the fairway for 150 yards and diagonal brook 15 to 50 yards short of the green.

Hole 7 - Par 4 - Yardage 270 - S/I 13
Considered one of the easier par 4's. Requires a good accurate drive to enable a neat pitch to an elevated green faced with three bunkers.

Hole 8 - Par 5 - Yardage 492 - S/I 7
Out of bounds on the right but a tee shot to the left of the fairway makes the second shot difficult over or around trees to a left hand dog leg towards the green - bunkered left and right.

Hole 9 - Par 3 - Yardage 185 - S/I 11
The green is well built into a wood, with the front guarded by bunkers. A good long or medium iron but for the unwary the brook 70 yards from the tee catches the duff shot.

Hole 10 - Par 5 - Yardage 484 - S/I 6
Bounded by the wood all the way on the left, with the second shot played up rising ground and against the prevailing wind, the tenth is considered the toughest par 5.

Hole 11 - Par 5 - Yardage 512 - S/I 10
The 11th runs in reverse to No 10 and although longer, a good drive may bring the green within reach of the second shot which must be well played to carry the brook guarding the front of the green.

Hole 12 - Par 3 - Yardage 168 - S/I 16
A gap of 20 yards between trees calls for a well struck iron shot to this flat green.

Hole 13 - Par 4 - Yardage 425 - S/I 2
This is the most difficult par 4. The green is out of sight for the second shot, which if pulled lands in trouble in the woods.

Hole 14 - Par 4 - Yardage 290 - S/I 12
A short par 4 requiring a very accurate drive. The green is long and narrow and with out of bounds behind presents a problem to all but the straightest tee shot.

Hole 15 - Par 4 - Yardage 399 - S/I 4
Considered the most attractive par 4, with a slight dog leg to the right. The green is excavated from sloping ground and has a tantalising putting surface.

Hole 16 - Par 3 - Yardage 181 - S/I 14
Flanked by trees on the right with the back portion of the green practically hidden by a large tree, a very well played shot is necessary to avoid both the trees and a bunker on the face of the green.

Hole 17 - Par 4 - Yardage 400 - S/I 8
A demanding finishing hole. The green is blind when playing the tee shot; if pulled the wood receives the ball, a slice will find a neighbouring back garden.

Hole 18 - Par 3 - Yardage 130 - S/I 18
The last of the six short holes on the course. A delightful end to the round requiring a firm shot to a gently sloping green backed by the clubhouse.
