Golf Club Descriptions
Pwllheli Golf Club
Another of the superb collection of quality courses in North Wales. Pwllheli has often been described as a unique golf course with 9 holes being gentle parkland and 9 holes being a true test of links golf. The course measures 6,108 yards par 69 for the men and 5,224 yards par 71 for the ladies. The course is flat and is suitable for golfers of all ages and abilities.
From the course and clubhouse, there are superb views of Snowdonia and over Cardigan Bay to the Cambrian Mountain range, and the Clubhouse is closer to the sea than any other Golf Clubhouse in the U.K.
In 1998, in a survey for golf monthly magazine by a group of independent golf panellists, amongst them Walker Cup captain Peter McEvoy, Pwllheli was listed as one of 7 Welsh golf clubs to appear on the "Top 200 Courses in Britain" - a fact that the Club is proud of.

The Course
Hole 1 - Par 4 - Yardage 382 - S/I 12
A good challenging opening hole of medium length, which may look deceivingly straightforward off the tee, however, beware of the trees to the left and to the right. Also observe the mound 80 yards short of the green and the bunkers that guard the target area.
Hole 2 - Par 4 - Yardage 423 - S/I 4
A long tee shot between the trees that guard the fairway on this long dogleg hole is necessary, and of paramount importance, if the player is to have sight of the green when playing the second shot. Out of bounds awaits the wayward shot to the left and behind the green.
Hole 3 - Par 3 - Yardage 154 - S/I 18
The Stoke Index of this hole could deceive a player into thinking that the hole is easier than it actually is. As with most holes at Pwllheli, and for a variety of reasons, the tee shot is of paramount importance. However, having hit the large sloping green, great care has to be taken if one is not to take three putts.
Hole 4 - Par 4 - Yardage 377 - S/I 10
Trees and gorse await the wayward tee shot to the right, and there are also trees to the left of the fairway and to the rear of the green.
Hole 5 - Par 4 - Yardage 317 - S/I 16
There is a large pond about 30 yards short of the green. The fairway is again well guarded by trees, but a good drive will leave only a relatively short pitch to the green, and hopefully, a birdie.
Hole 6 - Par 4 - Yardage 339 - S/I 14
Again, trees line both sides of the fairway, which is relatively wide. The iron shot to the two-tiered sloping green, which is guarded by four bunkers, and has to be very accurate.
Hole 7 - Par 4 - Yardage 441 - S/I 2
This is the last of the inland holes on the first nine, and only the better players are able to reach the green in the regulation. There is a shallow ditch 80 yards short of the green ready to catch the player lacking in course management. Two bunkers protect the green and out of bounds looms to the rear.
Hole 8 - Par 4 - Yardage 350 - S/I 8
This is the first hole of the links part of the course. Although, it is not a long hole, an accurate tee shot is necessary to avoid thick gorse flanking the fairway left and right. The frequent facing prevailing wind is also a factor.
Hole 9 - Par 4 - Yardage 400 - S/I 6
A very wide fairway awaits the tee shot but the green is hidden behind two grass-covered mounds when taking the second shot.
Hole 10 - Par 3 - Yardage 197 - S/I 11
A very testing 'short hole' which requires a precise shot to hit the green. The green is well guarded by two deep-faced front bunkers and two bunkers to the right. The Tanbwlch cottage at the rear of the green makes this a picturesque hole.
Hole 11 - Par 4 - Yardage 291 - S/I 15
This hole has an elevated tee with magnificent views in all directions. One can see Snowdon to the northeast, the Cader Idris range of Meirionydd to the southeast, St. Tudwal Islands to the southwest and, on a clear day, the Prescelly Mountains of Pembrokeshire to the south. Again, a good tee shot could set up a 'birdie chance'.
Hole 12 - Par 3 - Yardage 146 - S/I 17
This is one of the 'easier' holes on the course. The green is set in the elbow of the river, which guards the left, and the rear of the green. A bunker awaits the safety shot to the right.
Hole 13 - Par 4 - Yardage 422 - S/I 3
An accurate tee shot is essential as gorse and trees guard the left of the fairway for 300 yards. There is also a fairway bunker as well as a copse of conifer trees to the right and six bunkers to negotiate short of the sloping green.
Hole 14 - Par 4 - Yardage 422 - S/I 7
This is a very interesting and challenging hole with a sharp dogleg to the right. An accurate tee shot close to one of the fairway bunkers is required. The shot to the green is fraught with danger. A pond to the left, the river to the rear and a bunker slightly short guard the narrow sloping green.
Hole 15 - Par 4 - Yardage 455 - S/I 1
As the Stoke Index suggests, this is the most difficult hole on the course. The river, gorse and trees follow the dogleg all the way along to the left. A ditch crosses the fairway to catch a topped drive, and more gorse waits to the right to catch the slice or the push off the tee. If the drive is both long and on the right line, a good shot is still needed to reach a well-protected green.
Hole 16 - Par 4 - Yardage 347 - S/I 9
This is a favourite hole for many, and the opposite for others. Gorse needs to be cleared off the tee, and with more gorse both left and right of the fairway, it is essential to strike a good tee shot, the second shot is then relatively straightforward.
Hole 17 - Par 4 - Yardage 382 - S/I 5
The best line off the tee is to the left of the fairway marker, but the tee shot has to be fairly long to enable the player to have sight of the flag when playing the second shot. A safe tee shot down the right side of the fairway leaves a testing blind shot over the tall conifer trees.
Hole 18 - Par 4 - Yardage 351 - S/I 13
The 18th is a pleasant medium length hole and comes as a relief following several holes fraught with danger off the tees. The green is well guarded with bunkers short, to the left, and to right.
