Golf Club Descriptions

Nefyn & District Golf Club

Nefyn is quite unique. Apart from having a pub two thirds of the way around the course, the views are exceptional and the course itself is very fair. Arguably the best holes are 11 to 18 on the 'Old Course' which are situated on a headland.

No hole in the world confronts the golfer with the distractions to be met on the par five 12th on the 'Old Course' at Nefyn - it has a blind drive, a blind second shot, a public thoroughfare, a crater-sized pothole and a public house. It also has sensational views but you may not notice while ensuring your first shots are accurate. As you follow your second over the brow, the pothole is to the left of a narrow road but you may face more of a hazard on the right because one glance over the cliff could ruin your round.

The seaside hamlet of Porthdinllaen is so pretty it has been preserved by the National Trust and there, right on the beach, is the Ty Coch (Red House) pub. It is the nearest to heaven most golfers are likely to get. Ten of Nefyn's holes run alongside the sea and the experience is such that the club's boast is that few people play there only once. It is one of the most beautifully situated courses in Britain but, as a true championship course, can be beastly to the wayward.

The Course

The course consists of a front 10 holes and two distinctly different back 8 holes. The first 10 holes of the course have the 2nd, 3rd and 4th holes bordering on cliffs. The 5th hole has a spectacular tee jutting out over the sea. The route back to the clubhouse from the 6th onwards, looking over both sea and mountains, has some of the best views of the surrounding scenery on the course. On favourable days, it is even possible to see the tops of the Wicklow Mountains in Ireland.

The "Old Course" is a Par 70/71, measures 6138 yards, with a SSS of 71. The Old Course back 8 follows the peninsular which surrounds Porth Dinllaen bay and gives spectacular views of both the surrounding bay and cliffs. In the far distance, both Anglesey and Snowdonia can be seen on most days. The 13th hole on the "Old Course" is very challenging, where the brave (or foolish) and the long can "go for it" across the cliffs. The 14th on the Old Course is probably the signature hole for this part of the course, with fantastic views over Porth Dinllaen Bay, towards the Rivals and Anglesey.

The "New Course" is a Par 71, measures 6548 yards (White Tees), with a SSS of 71. The New Course back 8 follows gently rolling fairways with strategically placed bunkers and some challenging rough for the wayward player. The 15th is a Par 4 dog-leg left, with a relatively long carry across AOB to cut off the corner. "Old Wil" a somewhat taciturn character, can often be seen sitting patiently in the gorse on the side of the bank, spotting every wayward ball (not necessarily for your benefit!).
