Golf Club Descriptions

Llanymynech Golf Club

Positioned on the Welsh Border with the County of Shropshire lies Llanymynech Golf Club, affectionately known locally as "The Hill".

Don't let that nickname put you off, it is the unique position of the course atop one of the areas' most important historical hill forts, that affords the breathtaking views of both the Shropshire Plains and the mountains of Snowdonia and Mid-Wales.

The course measures just over 6000 yards and is set in over 100 acres of countryside seen as so valuable it has been declared a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The club works closely with the environment and historical agencies to preserve all aspects of Llanymynech Hill for the enjoyment of all.

This may be the only course in the world where you can tee off in one country and putt out in another, on the same hole incidentally. Indeed, there are 15 holes in Wales and 3 in England, with the 4th Hole actually crossing the border as you play it.

The Course

Hole 1 - Par 3 - Yardage 163 - S/I 17
A fairly straightforward par 3 to start but if the wind blows, take care.

Hole 2 - Par 5 - Yardage 517 - S/I 7
A dog leg par 5 with out of bounds all the way down the right hand side.

Hole 3 - Par 3 - Yardage 156 - S/I 15
A devilish par 3, played about 10 yards inside Wales but England is out of bounds.

Hole 4 - Par 4 - Yardage 339 - S/I 9
A unique hole in golf. Tee off in Wales, putt out in England.

Hole 5 - Par 4 - Yardage 359 - S/I 5
Dog leg left to an elevated green. The hill fort defence trenches can clearly be seen on the approach to the green.

Hole 6 - Par 3 - Yardage 190 - S/I 13
Play from an elevated tee down to a long narrow green.

Hole 7 - Par 4 - Yardage 415 - S/I 3
Back into Wales. From an elevated tee, into the prevailing wind this one can be a real test.

Hole 8 - Par 4 - Yardage 352 - S/I 11
Dog leg right to an elevated green. A good position off the tee is required for a clear shot to the green.

Hole 9 - Par 5 - Yardage 545 - S/I 1
A very long and difficult hole, especially if played into the prevailing wind.

Hole 10 - Par 3 - Yardage 177 - S/I 14
Over a ravine and two bunkers, simple! If you feel hard done by though take a look down to the 9th green, they played it from there in the old days.

Hole 11 - Par 4 - Yardage 254 - S/I 18
Over the highest point on the course and the view really is breathtaking, don't let the length of this hole fool you though, it can be tough.

Hole 12 - Par 4 - Yardage 437 - S/I 2
Linger on the tee briefly. From here on a clear day you can see Shropshire, Cheshire, Staffordshire, Worcestershire, Herefordshire, Derbyshire, Powys, Clwyd and Gwynedd. The hole itself is one of the toughest up here, an undulating fairway to a basin green apart from the left side which drops away sharply.

Hole 13 - Par 4 - Yardage 368 - S/I 6
Fairly straightforward par 4 as long as you don't stray left from the tee, or indeed, right!

Hole 14 - Par 5 - Yardage 491 - S/I 10
Tight from the tee, turning right and opening up to the green. Offa's Dyke footpath, which signifies the ancient border of Wales and England runs along the left of this hole.

Hole 15 - Par 4 - Yardage 319 - S/I 16
Drive to the top of the ridge and play down to the basin green. Watch out for the large bunker in front and the ravine just to the right of the green. For the ladies a nice par 3 from the elevated tee.

Hole 16 - Par 3 - Yardage 187 - S/I 12
This is a good one, uphill into the prevailing wind, gorse and hawthorn bushes left, old mine shaft heads short and right. Walk on the tee, mark down three and a half and get on the next.

Hole 17 - Par 4 - Yardage 394 - S/I 4
Tight fairway, not to be missed left as it slopes away. Missing the green left or right will leave a tough pitch.

Hole 18 - Par 4 - Yardage 384 - S/I 8
Drive down from the elevated tee to a fairway that narrows and then up again to an elevated green. However, there are a few surprises in store.
